- 1. Reason for making your article(s) open access on KURENAI
In Japan, there is no major sharing website of research articles like arXiv that individuals can deposit with simple procedures. I learned about KURENAI through an email from the university and through the connection to the achievement database.
2. Benefit of publishing your article(s) on KURENAIAbstracts and technical reports from academic conferences, which were previously only available to members of the academic society and a few readers, as well as preprints and Japanese articles, became made widely available.

- 1. Reason for making your article(s) open access on KURENAI
I agree with the purpose of the open access policy, "By ensuring that research outputs can be freely available both inside and outside the university, we contribute to the further development of academic research, promote information disclosure, and fulfill our responsibility to society."
KURENAI guarantees permanent access to deposited contents. Besides, they are indexed in various search engines and databases (e.g., Google Scholar).
In addition, it allows us to make various types of materials (e.g., educational materials, research data, peer review reports, etc.) open access, not only articles.2. Benefit of publishing your article(s) on KURENAI・I believe that research outputs are now accessible to a wide range of people around the world.
・Not only articles, but also academic outputs such as educational materials and newsletters, are published on KURENAI, distributing to broader communities.

- 1. Reason for making your article(s) open access on KURENAI
Subscription fees for online journals are rising, making it difficult for less-funded research institutes to subscribe. I expect that those institutes will be able to collect information by making the journals available on KURENAI, which will contribute to academic society.

- 1. Reason for making your article(s) open access on KURENAI
I heard that due to the effects of COVID-19, many students and researchers had difficulty accessing books, which hindered their studies. In particular, it was difficult to access even books designated as textbooks of lectures, because older Japanese books have not been made into e-books.
2. Benefit of publishing your article(s) on KURENAIRegardless of the pandemic, it seems that people both Japan and abroad who had difficult to access my publications (especially, English books) are now able to access and refer to them for their studies and research. However, most Japanese books have not been made open access because Japanese publishers are not flexible in their response.

- 1. Reason for making your article(s) open access on KURENAI
Research outputs published in proceedings of academic conferences and symposiums, reports, etc., are not (or are not likely to be) referred to as previous research, and I feel sorry for them because I often come across research that has already been discussed. KURENAI has a great influence, so people who need it would be able to find it easily by making them open access via KURENAI.
2. Benefit of publishing your article(s) on KURENAICompared to the unstable publication on proprietary servers, the fact that disclosure is maintained as an institution also functions to permanently preserve research outputs, which is reliable. I expect that not only articles but also research data and other materials will be preserved and made open access.

- 1. Reason for making your article(s) open access on KURENAI
I realized that when web searches have become developed today, publishing research outputs online is extremely important in terms of disseminating them. Furthermore, I also deposit semi-finished manuscripts that had not been published in journals due to character limit restrictions and theses collaborated with undergraduate students on KURENAI, because I believe they make a significant academic contribution.
2. Benefit of publishing your article(s) on KURENAIMore people than I expected have read my publications through web search. Just the other day, I received an online interview request from a staff of a TV station in Kyushu who had seen the article published on KURENAI.

- 1. Reason for making your article(s) open access on KURENAI
This was triggered by the development of the Kyoto University Open Access Policy. I understand that research outputs such as academic articles produced by Kyoto University faculty members must be made publicly available on KURENAI in principle.
2. Benefit of publishing your article(s) on KURENAIAfter depositing the first few articles, I immediately found a significant number of downloads. I was happy about this and try to deposit as many articles as possible thereafter.
- Prof. Shinya Aoki (Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics) new!
- 1. Reason for making your article(s) open access on KURENAI
Because I was asked to deposit.
2. Benefit of publishing your article(s) on KURENAINothing particular at the moment, but I think it is important to make outputs open access.
- Prof. Masahiro Sogabe (Graduate School of Law)
- 1. Reason for making your article(s) open access on KURENAI
Until then, I had deposited some of my articles on a private document sharing website. But when I learned about KURENAI, I decided to deposit them here instead.
2. Benefit of publishing your article(s) on KURENAIBy sharing the research on social media, researchers in other disciplines, legal practitioners, journalists, and the general public were able to widely learn about the research, which led to a variety of personal connections. Because my research topic was interdisciplinary in nature, there was a great synergistic effect between publishing the full text on KURENAI and spreading it via social media.

- 1. Reason for making your article(s) open access on KURENAI
As I had more opportunities to peer-review manuscripts, I found out a growing tendency for publications which made public online to become the references. This led me to think that it would be better to make my publications accessible online if I wanted people to read them.
2. Benefit of publishing your article(s) on KURENAIThe monthly download counts of deposited articles are reported, so I feel that my research is actually read, which encourages me to write more manuscripts. In addition, the download counts are reported for each article, so I can find which parts of my research overlap with the current interests of the public.
- Prof. Satoru Fujishige (Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences)
- 1. Reason for making your article(s) open access on KURENAI
Commercial academic journals and some journals are inaccessible for a certain period of time (usually, several years) and can only be read by researchers affiliated with research institutions who pay the subscription fees. I believe that making author's final manuscripts versions, which are almost same as the publisher version, freely available to read is an appropriate way to disseminate information to researchers both in Japan and abroad.
2. Benefit of publishing your article(s) on KURENAIEven non-open access journals have email services that send out articles that have been accepted. Researchers who do not receive the service also can find the articles published on KURENAI through search engines and download them, is a desirable and effective form of information dissemination. Besides, in commercial journals, because published articles are not guaranteed to retain forever, I think it is important that articles are stored in public institutions such as KURENAI.
- Prof. Tetsuya Takemi (Disaster Prevention Research Institute)
- 1. Reason for making your article(s) open access on KURENAI
As one means of disseminating research outputs, the common platform at the university has the potential to take advantage of scale and thus provide a means of contribution to communities, so I decided to deposit my articles on KURENAI.
2. Benefit of publishing your article(s) on KURENAIBy using KURENAI, I can publish accepted manuscripts that have not optioned open access, allowing researchers who are not accessible to such articles available. In addition, I regularly receive access information for my articles, such that it is useful to know how much my research outputs are interested in.
