Wiley APC Discount

Kyoto University has the Transformative Agreements with Wiley from January 2023.
Under this agreement, APC discounts are applied to articles submitted to Wiley journals by authors affiliated with Kyoto University.
Please note that this discount information does not constitute the Library's endorsement of submissions to any particular publisher.

Which publications are covered by the agreements?

Please refer to Wiley Austhor Services for lists of journals eligible for the APC discount.

There are two types of Wiley journals, and your OA publishing workflow will be different according to which type of journal you publish in.

  • Hybrid OA/Subscription Journals …A hybrid journal is one which means a subscription journal that also offers the option of publishing articles open access.
  • Fully Open Access Journals …An open access Journal is one where every article is published open access.

If the publisher of the journal to which you are submitting changes from Wiley to another company (transfer), articles that have not yet been published (published in Early View) at the time of transfer are not eligible for the transformative agreements with Wiley (i.e., are not eligible for discounted APCs). Please note that in such cases, authors are required to pay the full amount of the APC to the transferring publisher (if you publish as a non-OA in a hybrid journal, you do not need to pay the APC). Please refer to the following file for details.

Eligible article classifications

Eligible article

January 1, 2023-December 31, 2024 * Articles accepted between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2025 are eligible for the APC discount.

  • Hybrid OA: For articles to be accepted during the above period, the author submits an OA request after an article is accepted, on Wiley's Author Services website.
  • Full OA: For articles to be submitted during the above period, the author submits an OA request when submitting a manuscript through a submission system.

The number of articles to which the APC discount can be applied is limited by year as follows:

  • 2024: 331
  • 2025: 338 (Fully Open Access Journals: 68, Hybrid OA/Subscription Journals: 270)

If the article is made OA after the limit is exceeded, the APC will be charged directly to the author by Wiley, with a 5% discount on the regular APC amount set by Wiley.

Workflow of Submitting an OA Request

Eligible person

Researchers affiliated with KU who are able to pay the discounted APC by the following methods

  • Wiley requires the Responsible Corresponding Author (RCA) to be a member of a participating institution in order to be eligible for OA publishing under this agreement. Each article may have more than one Corresponding Author (CA), but only a single designated "Responsible Corresponding Author" who will be in charge of the administrative details for the article.
  • Library staff will check whether you are a member of KU or not from the e-mail address (ending with kyoto-u.ac.jp) you entered when submitting the article.

Amount and payment method of discounted APC

Since the APC for OA publishing from KU has already been paid to Wiley, the library will charge the researcher an amount equivalent to the APC after applying the discount.
