Student book request will be available from 1st June, 2022.
If you have any books you wish to be stocked at Katsura Library or North and South Library (Yoshida Campus), please let us know.

Who can make a request?

  • Request to Katsura Library : All students belonging to Kyoto University (including auditing students, trainees, and research students)
  • Request to the North and South Library : Students belonging to the Graduate School of Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering (including auditing students, trainees, and research students)

The NDL's Digitized Contents Transmission Service for Individuals to Launch

The National Diet Library, Japan, (the NDL) launched a Digitized Contents Transmission Service for Individuals.

North/South Library Learning Commons are open from Monday, May 2, 2022. Learning Commons is a space for self-study, group study and discussion. KU users can use them freely.

【Katsura Library】This is the second anniversary of the opening.

On April 7, Katsura library celebrated its second anniversary. We appreciate your support so far.

In commemoration of our 2 year anniversary, we are giving away original library goods to the first 100 persons (only Kyoto Univ. members).

We look forward to your visit.

Research commons, which can be used for group work and for events, Group study rooms, which are currently used remotely, etc., it is a library that can be used for various purposes.

If you would like to use Katsura library's resources on Yoshida campus, "Place a Hold Service" is also available (with some exceptions).

Welcome to the new year at Katsura campus!

Katsura library supports your study and research with various facilities and services.
If you have any trouble collecting items or writing papers please feel free to ask us!

How to use the library

Opening hours

9:00~19:00 on Weekdays
*After 17:00 please use the door on the 2nd floor which can be opened by IC card. If you have a facility use certificate, you need another registration to use the library.

Service hours(Katsura Library)

2nd Floor

  • Information Desk
    : Borrow and return books or get the request books here. You can also apply for facilities in the library.
  • Open Lab & Research Commons (Website is Japanese only)
    : These areas are designed to encourage researches` interacting and intellectual activities of students outside of their affiliated laboratories. You can also use these areas to work with a researcher who are not a member of Kyoto university.
    It is possible to use not only as the place for group work or discussion but also as the exhibition hall of academic conference.
  • Media Creation Room & Studio (Website is Japanese only)
    : Media creation room is for create research and study contents. (Reservation required)
    We also have Studio to record or edit a movie and make a graphic contents.

1st Floor

  • Reading Room
    : Mainly, books published since the 1990s and new journals are placed.
    The main subject of items is natural science. We also have useful books about writing papers or making a presentation. In addition there are best-sellers and liberal education books.
  • Stack 1
    : The books are stacked by the faculty of engineering departments. You can freely enter and browse.
  • Group Study Rooms
    : Spaces for group study and discussion.
    To prevent the spread of COVID-19, currently they are used to take a speech lecture or an online meeting alone.(Registration required)
  • Theater Room
    : Space for viewing video materials.(Reservation required)
    Equipped with soundproofing, you can watch Blu-ray and DVD on a 4K-compatible 85inch TV.
  • Lounge
    : Relaxation area with sofas, beverages and todays' newspaper.
  • Terrace
    : The south terrace on the 1st floor is open on sunny day. You can work on PC or read books at ease viewing Kyoto city.

Basement Floor

If you need the item on the basement floor, please ask library staff at the information desk or use Place a Hold Service.

  • Books
    : Especially old items are stored in the underground stack.
  • Journals
    : Journals' back numbers are stored in the underground stack.
  • Natural Science BNC (Back Number Center) Journals
    : The Katsura Library, which is an Area Cooperative Library, has collected a total of 3,765 titles from the BNC (Back Number Center) including selected titles in the field of natural sciences, to serve as the shared facility for the joint preservation of science and engineering materials across the university.

    : Here are useful online services for searching and collecting library materials.
    Online services enables you to search items or get research information without coming libraries. Please make a good use of it!
  • The Katsura Library Virtual Tour
    : Online space reproduced in 3D. You can access it through your own PC and smartphone, and learn how to use Katsura Library.
  • "Katsura-no-Niwa" : Catalogue for Advanced Research of Graduate School of Engineering (Website is Japanese only)
    : This project shows the research activities worked on at the graduate school and faculty of engineering.
    We introduce "Research Seeds" which are difficult to see but blossom in the future by opening a door of laboratory.
    "Katsura-no-Niwa" exhibition booth is in Katsura library. The movies of interview and demonstration experiment are on YouTube. Don't miss it!

[Katsura Library] Change of opening hours (From April 1)

Katusra Library will extend the opening time. 

  • Opening hours: Weekdays (Mon.-Fri)  9: 00 - 19: 00

*You can only enter from the IC certification door on the second floor from 17:00 to 19:00. 

*Non-Kyoto University Members can only stay until 17:00.

[Katsura Library] New collection "Diversity & Inclusion Books" has been released!

Katsura Library has made the new collection "Diversity & Inclusion Books." (abbr. D&I Books)

"Diversity" means being composed of different races, genders, career backgrounds, skills, etc.
And "inclusion" is the practice of providing everyone with equal access to opportunities and resources. 

"Diversity & Inclusion Books" is the collection about gender gap, gender equality, human rights, mental health, and so on.
Let's deepen your knowledge of these social issues!

【Katsura Library】National Diet Library, Japan, the Digitized Contents Transmission Service for Libraries

It is available The Digitized Contents Transmission Service for Libraries provided by the National Diet Library, Japan (NDL) at Katsura Library. 

This service allows users to view and copy digital images of materials digitized by the NDL that are difficult to obtain due to out-of-print issues at Kyoto University Katsura Library.

Those who can use this service are only Kyoto University members. Please see below for details.
