[Library Network : for KU members] The APC Support Program for Accelerating Open Access

 On 2024-07-25 (5294 reads)

In February 2024, the basic policy for the realization of immediate open access to academic papers, etc. (hereinafter referred to as the “National OA Policy”) was decided at the Integrated Innovation Strategy Promotion Council.

In the case of Kyoto University, researchers who will receive Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, etc. publicly solicited from FY2025 onward will, in principle, be required to register their peer-reviewed academic papers including the author's final version and evidence data that are the result of the research grant in the Kyoto University Academic Information Repository "KURENAI" and other services.

Kyoto University has already established an open access policy and has developed the "KURENAI". But, as a response to this national OA policy, to further promote the Kyoto University Open Access Policy, the Kyoto University Library Network will subsidize the APC (Article Processing Charge, hereinafter referred to as "APC") for researchers who make their articles open access.

For a list of eligible journals, article types, and other detailed application requirements, the following URL.

This project is funded by the grant "Open Access Acceleration Project https://www.mext.go.jp/b_menu/boshu/detail/1421775_00008.htm" for FY2024 only.
The support program will be implemented only in FY2024, and will not be implemented in FY2025 or later.

Please note that this program does not constitute the Library Network's endorsement of submissions to any particular publisher.

[Library Network][Attention!] Regarding Bulk Access to Electronic Resources Due to Automatic Download Features of Reference Management Tools and Browser Preloading Functions

 On 2024-07-22 (7053 reads)

Electronic resources such as e-journals, e-books, and databases are subject to access restrictions. Accessing a large number of resources in a short period of time may be considered a violation of the terms of use, and could result in Kyoto University's access to these resources being blocked by the provider.
Conditions of Use and Licensing Restrictions for E-Resources

Recently, there have been frequent cases of unintentional large-scale downloads and access caused by the automatic download functions of reference management software and the "link preloading function" of web browsers.

These "automatic download" and "link preloading" functions repeatedly access electronic journals in the background, even when you are not aware of it. This can lead to a large number of downloads and accesses being made without your knowledge.

Please review the following information and check the settings and usage methods of your reference management software and web browser.

Precautions and settings for reference management software

  • Paperpile
    • Old version

Click the gear icon in the top right corner of the screen. Go to Settings > Storage & Sync. Uncheck the "Automatically download PDFs" box.

    • New version (public beta)

Click the account icon in the top right corner of the screen. Go to Settings > General. Turn off the toggle button "Automatically download article PDFs".

Please note: If this box is checked (or the toggle button on), PDFs will be downloaded for all references, especially when "Auto-Update" is performed after migrating from another software.

  • Zotero

Right-click on an item in the item list and select "Find Available PDFs" to automatically download the PDF. Avoid downloading PDFs when multiple items are selected.

If your browser extension (Zotero Connector) has proxy settings, you will be taken to Kyoto University's authentication screen each time you access e-journals and other services. When you leave Kyoto University, please deactivate (or delete) the setting or disable the extension itself.

[Reference] Uncheck "Enable proxy redirection" under “Proxies" in "Zotero Connector Preferences".
    https://www.zotero.org/support/connector_preferences

  • ReadCube Papers

Select "LOCATE PDF" from the reference list to download the PDF. Avoid selecting multiple items at once, as this may be considered a large-scale download.

[For reference] Bulk Downloading PDFs in your Papers Library

  • EndNote Click (browser extension)

If this extension is active while searching a reference database, it may attempt to download all reference information and full-text PDFs at once, which could be considered a large-scale download. Disable this extension or, if you must use it, do not register your affiliation in the account settings and set the option to "Free PDFs only".

  • Mendeley Web Importer (browser extension)

This extension has a function to automatically collect reference bibliographic information and full-text PDFs from the displayed page. This could be considered a large-scale download, so disable this extension or, if you must use it, uncheck the "Add PDF if possible" box in the settings.

Do not use the automatic download function of any other reference management software.

How to disable the "link preloading function" in each web browser

  • Microsoft Edge (Chromium version)
    1. Go to Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Manage and delete cookies and site data.
    2. Turn off "Preload pages for faster browsing and searching".
  • Google Chrome

Go to Settings > Performance. Turn off "Preload pages".

  • FireFox
    1. In the URL bar, type "about:config" and press Enter.
    2. If a warning page appears stating "Proceed with Caution", click "Accept the Risk and Continue".
    3. In the search bar, search for "prefetch-next".
    4. If "network.prefetch-next" is set to "true", double-click it to change it to "false" (if it is already set to "false", do nothing).
  • Safari (Mac)
    1. Open Safari > Preferences.
    2. Go to the Search tab.
    3. Uncheck the box "Preload Top Hits in the background".

Please note: The specific settings and methods for disabling the "link preloading function" may vary depending on the version of the software. Please refer to the help documentation for your software if you are unsure.

[Library Network] Kyoto University Rare Materials Digital Archive: Jugaku Collection, Muromachi Tales and Daisō-bon have been newly digitized and released

 On 2024-07-03 (2131 reads)

101 items, including 64 items from Jugaku Collection and 3 items of Muromachi Tales held by the Graduate School of Letters, and 34 items from Daisō-bon held by the Main Library, have been newly digitized and released.

▼Graduate School of Letters
▼Daiso-bon

Jugaku Collection was formerly owned by the Japanese linguist Akiko Jugaku (壽岳章子; 1924-2005), and is a collection of mainly Shōmono, commentaries on Chinese classics and Buddhist scriptures produced during the Muromachi period. In 1987, Ms. Jugaku published a facsimile edition of 9 items titled Kōjitsuan Shōmonoshū (向日庵抄物集), and later donated 66 original items to the Graduate School of Letters.
After 37 years since the publication of the facsimile edition, we have now digitized 64 items in addition to the already released Rokumotsuzu (六物圖), and made almost the entire collection available to the public. Overwritten corrections, fill-in erasures and discolored sticky notes found in manuscripts, which were difficult to read in black and white photocopies, are now easier to read in high-resolution digital images.

Muromachi Tales (Otogi Zōshi) is the general term for short stories produced during the Muromachi period. They were often enjoyed in the form of illustrated books.
Shizuka (しづか) was produced as a Nara ehon (Nara picture book) with 18 colored illustrations to the lyrics of the Kōwaka dance piece featuring Shizuka Gozen, the concubine of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The original format was a booklet, but it has been converted into a scroll.
Kōwaka dance was a popular performing art during the Muromachi period, and books containing its lyrics spread as reading material. The entertaining stories and the highly colored illustrations delight the eyes of viewers, both in the past and present.

We introduce many other Otogi Zōshi on "Colored Illustrations", so please take a look as well.
As of July 3, 2024, Kyoto University Rare Materials Digital Archive provides 2,153,823 images of 25,503 titles.

* The digitization of this collection is conducted under the “Project to Build an International Collaborative Research Network for Pre-modern Japanese Texts” by the National Institute of Japanese Literature in which Kyoto University Library participates.

Kyoto University has been blocked from accessing content on the ACS Publications website due to an excessive download violation again.

Solved! (2024/06/22)

Kyoto University has been blocked from accessing content on the ACS Publications website due to an excessive download violation since the morning of June 20.

[Library Network] Kyoto University Rare Materials Digital Archive: 225 titles from the Main Library’s Daiso-bon collection newly released

 On 2024-05-23 (3208 reads)

225 titles from the Daiso-bon collection held by the Main Library have been newly digitized and released.

Daiso-bon is a collection of books formerly owned by Daiso (大惣), a book lender run by Sohachi Onoya (大野屋惣八) and his family in Nagoya from the middle of the Edo period to the middle of the Meiji period. Book lenders at the time usually kept books in high demand in their stock and sold the ones out of fashion away to buy new ones. Daiso, however, had a policy not to sell away books they had bought and increased their inventory until the end of the Edo period when they became the largest book lender in Japan. After the arrival of mass production of books in the Meiji period, many book lenders disappeared, Daiso being no exception. Around 1898, Daiso decided to close the business and sold its enormous inventory of 16,734 titles of books, most of which were acquired by the Imperial Library (current National Diet Library), Tokyo Imperial University, Kyoto Imperial University and the Higher Normal School (current University of Tsukuba). Daiso Collection owned by Kyoto University amounts to 3,667 titles, or 13,081 volumes.

[Library Network] Kyoto University Rare Materials Digital Archive: Six Hanging rolls from the Kikutei Collection have been newly released

 On 2024-03-29 (3153 reads)

Thanks to the Kyoto University Rare Materials Digital Archive Fund, six Hanging rolls from the Kikutei Collection have been newly released.

Kikutei Collection is an assembly of manuscripts and books handed down through the Kikutei Family founded by Kanesue (1281-1339; 兼季), the forth son of Sanekane Saionji (1249-1322; 西園寺実兼). The Kikutei (Imadegawa) Family was designated one of the highest status court families called the Seiga (清華) family which members can be appointed as Daijō-daijin (太政大臣) and served as biwa (Japanese lute) players. The collection includes many records of the court rituals, documents on music and instruments, and diaries hand-written by nobles.
The collection deposited in 1921 and 1923 and additional documents and scrolls of portraits related to the Kikutei Family were donated to the Main Library, Kyoto University by the owner of the collection and were formally registered as the holdings of the library in January 2021.

"Kinnori-kō waka" (公規公和歌) is a letter from Kinnori Imadegawa (今出川公規) when he asked Michishige Nakanoin (中院通茂) to correct his waka.

The four Buddhist paintings all depict Myōonten in vivid colors.
Myōonten, holding a biwa (Japanese lute), is the god of music, and it is evident that the Kikutei (Imadegawa) Family, who served as biwa players, worshipped in this god.

[Library Network] Kyoto University Rare Materials Digital Archive: Madarajima Documents Have Been Newly Released By A Joint Project With Princeton University

 On 2024-03-29 (2388 reads)

14 items of Madarajima Documents have been newly released by a joint project with Princeton University

Madarajima Documents

Madarajima Documents

The Madarajima Documents (斑島文書) consist of one scroll containing 14 documents that were issued by commanders from the first half of the 14th century to the middle of the 16th century. This scroll was purchased in November 1916 from the long-established Kyoto antiquarian bookshop Chikuho Shoro (竹苞書楼).

The scroll contains a monogrammed edict (gohan mikyoj? 御判御教書) and a conveyance by the shogun’s chief of staff (kanrei h?sho 管領奉書)" guaranteeing the rights of the ?kusa family in Tajiri district, Suruga Province, as well as documents issued by other famous generals such as Ashikaga Takauji, Ashikaga Tadafuyu, Hosokawa Yoriyuki, Hosokawa Takakuni, and ?uchi Yoshitaka.

Three documents are addressed to the Madarajima family of Hizen Province, which is why Kyoto University has named these scrolls as the Madarajima Documents. These three letters were later conveyed to the Ariura family, a descendant of the Madarajima.

Kyoto University and Princeton University have initiated a joint project in March 2020 in order to deepen the knowledge and awareness of Japanese history and culture throughout the world. The goal is to disseminate images, transcriptions, translations, and research about Japanese documents owned by the Kyoto University Museum.

The Kyoto University Museum, Kyoto University Graduate School of Letters, Kyoto University Library Network and the Department of East Asian Studies of Princeton University will collaborate in carrying out this project.

[Library Network] Conditions of Use and Licensing Restrictions for E-Resources

 On 2024-03-01 (3401 reads)

Use of electronic resources including databases, e-journals and e-books subscribed by Kyoto University is subject to copyright laws and licence agreements.
The licences generally prohibit the following uses:

  • Systematic and programmatic download
  • Usage beyond the private purpose
  • Reproducing and distributing

Violation of the licence agreements may result in the suspension of access to e-resources for the whole University. Please be aware that access may also be blocked on a per-user basis due to the authentication system.

There have been frequent recent occurrences of users unintentionally downloading or accessing large volumes of data using pre-read browser functions.

Pre-read browser functions continually access links within pages in the background while pages are being viewed. As a result of this, large volume data downloads or large volume access of which the user is unaware may occur, even if the user intends to use electronic journals in the standard way.

We request your cooperation in disabling these functions by making the below changes to your browser settings.
