■Korean Rare Books (Kawai Collection and others) 461 titles
Kawai Collection consists of Korean rare manuscripts and books formerly held by Dr. Hirotami Kawai (1872-1918) who studied mainly history of Korea and its economy. Then Kyoto Imperial University (presently Kyoto University) bought the collection from his family in 1919 and has preserved it since then. The collection is indispensable in the research of Korean society, culture and especially finance, because it covers many fields such as official and private records, politics, economy, religion and customs. The items newly released this time are 461 titles of Korean rare books from Kawai Collection and others digitized under the collaborative project between Kyoto University Library, the Institute for Research in Humanities, Kyoto University and the Research Institute of Korean Studies, Korea University.

[Library Network] Kyoto University Rare Materials Digital Archive: Reunion of medical books as Digital Fujikawa over 70 years after its original owner's death

 On 2018-09-28 (4106 reads)

Kyoto University Library Network and Keio University Media Center concluded an agreement on the Joint Project on Digital Unification of Fujikawa Collection (Digital Fujikawa) and launched an integrated website that virtually brings together the holdings of both universities in one place by using the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) protocol on September 28, 2018.

Fujikawa Collection was built by Yu Fujikawa (1865-1940), who taught the history of medicine at Kyoto Imperial University Medical College and Keio University School of Medicine and authored History of Medicine in Japan (Nihon igakushi) in 1904 and History of Disease in Japan (Nihon ekibyoshi) in 1912. In order to write these and his other works, he had collected Japanese and Chinese medical books published between the Heian era and the beginning of the Meiji era and Western medical books in Japanese translation after the middle of the Edo period, mainly around the end of the Edo period.

This project intends to contribute to the development of the research in the history of medicine in Japan by providing the comprehensive view of Fujikawa Collection that has been physically divided into several parts, each currently held by a different institution. This is also a showcase of digital unification utilizing IIIF features, for which we plan to increase digital images available and participating institutions and develop new functions, in order to progress this project from the current trial phase to a full-scale phase by the end of academic year 2020/2021.

[Library Network] Kyoto University Rare Materials Digital Archive: "The Age of Natural History", "Thai Newspaper Collection during World War" newly released

 On 2018-09-07 (3772 reads)

"The Age of Natural History", "Thai Newspaper Collection during World War" and other digital images from rare materials held by Kyoto University's Graduate Schools have been newly released. 962,432 images of 10,377 titles are available in the Digital Archive as of September 7, 2018.

"The Age of Natural History" is a digitized collection of rare materials on natural history held by the Graduate School of Science, Medical Library and the Main Library.

▼The Age of Natural History

Natural History is the study of natural objects including animals, plants and minerals; collecting, recording and categorizing the information of their species and characteristics.

This collection includes important works on natural history such as Flora Japonica and Fauna Japonica by P.F.B. von Siebold, Histoire naturelle by G.L. de Buffon and Systema naturae by C. von Linne.

These images, some with detailed explanation, were first made open to the public in the former Kyoto University's Digital Library in 2001 or later. Images in higher resolution are now available in Kyoto University Rare Materials Digital Archive.

"Thai Newspaper Collection during World War II" held by CSEAS was digitized from three newspapers published in Thailand during World War II and now held by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University. The publishers no longer exist and part of the issues of the newspapers are difficult to find even in Thailand. (This project received permission for digitization from National Library of Thailand.)
