[Main Library]The library hours and services from April 1 to July 7 2022

The library hours and services of the Kyoto University Main Library will be changed from April 1st, 2022 to July 7th, 2022 as follows.

* Please refer to this page for the library hours and services until thursday, March 31th, 2022.
* Please refer to this page for the library hours and services after Friday, July 8th, 2022.

Notice as of April 1st, 2022
The Main Library offers the following services and facilities, but they can change depending on the COVID-19 situation.
Please check our web site for the latest information.

Please make sure to wear a mask, wash your hands and disinfect your fingers.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation for our safe use of the library.

 ■ Major Changes

  • 【Weekdays】Opening hours: 8:30 am - 9:30 pm

  • Learning Commons on the 1st floor is available more convenient for group use.
    (The limit on the number of the users is removed and the furniture can be moved.)

  • Common Study Room 4 and 5 on the 3rd floor are available for group study.

  • Study Cubicles on the 3rd floor are available without reservation.

  • Opening Hours
    Weekdays:8:30 am - 9:30 pm
    Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays:10:00 am - 7:00 pm

    * You can see the Library Schedule here.
    * The counter service on weekdays ends at 8:00 pm, and only the following services are available after that.
     ・Borrowing and returning books that cannot be handled by the automatic machines.
     ・Picking up reserved books.
     ・Picking up delivered photocopies of documents and books from other libraries *Until one hour before closing.

  1. Borrowing the Main Library Materials

    • How to Borrow Library Items
      • We provide 2 types of services ― regular service and book delivery service.
        Regular service
        You can check out the library materials by an automatic check-out machine on the 1st floor.
        Please find library items to borrow before visiting the library (via Kyoto University's OPAC KULINE) in order to keep your stay as short as possible.

        Book delivery service
        This service is for the following KU members.
        ・KU members who live outside Kyoto City
        ・KU members who cannot come to the library for health reasons
        You can apply via MyKULINE.

      • How to Renew Library Items
        Please use MyKULINE for extending borrowing period. The maximum time of extension is 5 for open -shelf books, 2 for books in the stacks, and 5 for periodicals.
        Renewal is not available if the book has been reserved by another user.
      • How to Return Library Items
        Please use the return box next to the main entrance.
        If you need to get items immediately processed, please use the automatic return machine on the 1st floor.
      • How to Return by Postal Mail or Other Delivery Services
          We accept the returns by mail. Please follow the instructions below.
          Please don't return the other library items by mail, but return them to the library counter. (e.g. items borrowed from other libraries of Kyoto University or other universities.)

        Notes:
         ・Please pack the books appropriately so that they will not be damaged in transit.
          Please wrap them in plastic bags or buffering material to prevent corruption or water damage.
         ・Please write "Returned books inside" clearly on the package or invoice.
         ・The user is responsible for shipping costs.
         ・Please keep a copy of the invoice in case of accident during transportation.


  2. Reading Area
    • Hours:
       1st and 2nd floor【Weekdays】8:30 am - 9:30 pm【Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays】10:00 am -7:00 pm
       3rd floor【Weekdays】9:00 am - 9:00 pm【Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays】10:00 am - 6:30 pm
    • Reading rooms on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors are available.
    • Study Room 24 is available.
      • Opening hours are the same with the Main Library.
      • “Nagomi” is not available.
    • The Learning Commons on the 1st floor is available for collaborative research and study by groups.
      • You can move the desks, chairs and white boards. Please be sure to use the splash prevention panels, "Table Masks".←New!
      • Wear a mask and disinfect your hands with the alcohol disinfectant at the entrance of the room.
      • Please disinfect your desk etc. with the alcohol towel at the entrance of the room before and after the use.
    • The Common Study Room 4 and 5 are also available for group study.
      *Application is required 7 to 3 days before the date of use.
      * You can use the room on the day if it is available. Please ask at the counter on the 1st floor.←New!

    • The Common Study Rooms 1 - 5 are available for the online interactive lessons.

    • Study Cubicles (14 rooms) are available. *No reservation is required.←New!
      • Please keep the door open for ventilation.
      • Please disinfect your desk etc. before and after the use.
      • In addition to faculty and graduate students, undergraduate students can use the Study Cubicles.
    • Please use the seats that are not marked as unavailable.

  3. The PC Area(OSL)
    • Hours: 【Weekdays】9:00 am - 9:00 pm【Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays】10:00 am - 6:30 pm
      * Please note that the power of PCs is forced to be turned off at closing time.
    • Please use terminals and seats that are not posted as unavailable.
    • Please disinfect the PC before use. Please keep the keyboard cover on.

  4. The Media Commons
    • Hours: 【Weekdays】9:00 am - 9:00 pm【Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays】10:00 am - 6:30 pm
    • Media Theater can be used by up to 5 people. Please apply at the counter on the 1st floor.←New!
      * You can apply from one week before the day you want to use. Please apply at the counter.
      * You can use the room on the day if it has no reservation. Please ask at the counter on the 1st floor.
    • You can use the Media Commons materials as before by taking them out to the PC area (OSL). Please follow the procedure below.
      1. Enter the Media Commons and select the materials you wish to view.
      2. Use the fixed PC terminal in the PC area (OSL).
      3. After viewing, return the material to its original position in the Media Commons.
      * Please bring your own earphones or headphones.
      * You can use your own PC in the PC area for materials that cannot be played on the fixed-type PC terminals in the PC area (OSL), such as Blu-ray discs and language learning CDs.
       When viewing materials in the reading area (not in the silent area), please be considerate of other users so that there is no sound leakage.
    • Please disinfect before use.

  5. Borrowing and Document Delivery Service from other KU Libraries
    • Service Hours: Until one hour before closing.
    • You can borrow books or obtain copies only from the libraries of other campuses.
      Please refer to "Intercampus Loan Service - Participating libraries" page.
    • Apply for the service through MyKULINE.
    • Please understand that your application may take more time to be processed than usual or even be canceled because of the COVID-19.
    • You can pick up delivered items at the Main Library's counter.
    • Return items borrowed from other KU libraries at the Main Library’s counter.

  6. Borrowing and Document Delivery Service from Libraries outside Kyoto University
    • Service Hours: Until one hour before closing.
    • The same rules as the above 5. apply.
    • Return items borrowed from libraries outside Kyoto University at the Main Library’s counter.

  7. Microfilm Readers
    • Hours: 9:00 am - 4:45 pm weekdays
    • We ask you to use the reader up to two hours.
    • Application is required at the counter.
    • Wash and disinfect your hands before using a reader.

  8. NDL’s Digitized Contents and Historical Recordings Collection (Rekion) Transmission Service
    • Hours: 9:00 am - 4:45 pm weekdays
    • We ask you to use the service up to two hours.
    • Application is required at the counter.
    • Wash and disinfect your hands before using the services.
    • When using NDL’s historical recordings collection transmission service, bring your own headphone.

      By a Digitized Contents Transmission Service for Individuals, the official registered users of the National Diet Library can read the materials
      which were once available only on the dedicated terminals in the partner libraries such as our Main Library on their own devices.

  9. Rare Materials
    • Hours: 9:00 - 11:45 am , 1:00 - 4:45 pm weekdays
    • A prior reservation is required. The deadline is as follows.
      KU members: One week prior to your desired access date.
      Non-KU members: Two weeks prior to your desired access date.
    • Wash and disinfect your hands before using rare materials.
    • We will take your body temperature before using rare materials.
      If you have a fever, you cannot use the materials.

  10. Registration of Kyoto University Library Card, Registration of MyKULINE Accounts
    We are now accepting registration of the Library Cards and MyKULINE accounts only via e-mail.
    Please apply by the following steps.
    *Please do not attach the application form or a photo of your ID card to your e-mail.

       that shows the period of your affiliation with the university (eg. student/faculty IC card, working conditions notice, etc.)
          *Please mask information on the Notice of Employment other than your name, affiliation, status and enrollment period.

    Your Library Card is completed, we will inform you via e-mail.
    Please come to the Main Library to receive your card between 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on weekdays.

  11. Guide for Non-KU Users
    Please refrain from visiting the Main Library if it is not necessary or urgent.
    If it is not necessary and urgent, please apply for inter-library loan services. For details, please click here.

    For those who have a Library Card such as graduates
    • Graduates can enter the stack rooms of the Main Library (Trial). *Application is required.
      Please refer to the Kyoto University Library Network News and come to apply during the reception hours.
          Trial period: June 1st, 2022 - March 31th, 2023
          Trial service: Graduates who have applied for this service can enter the B1, B2 and B3 floor of the Main Library and read the stack items.
                  *Only for the stack rooms of the Main Library.

      For graduate who cannot apply the trial or other non-KU members who have a Kyoto University Library Card:
      You can't enter the stack rooms. To use the stack items, please apply from the reservation form in advance.
    • Now, we accept new applications for the Library Card for graduates online. For more information, please click here.

    For other general users
    • If you don't have a letter of introduction, we will refuse to enter the Main Library regardless of circumstances.
      Before visiting, please consult the library of the university/institute that you belong to and request a reference survey and a letter of introduction.
      If you don't belong to any university/institute, please consult the public libraries nearby instead.
      We confirm the items you request and issue a letter of introduction. Please bring a letter of introduction and come to the Main Library on the day you booked.
    • Wear a mask before visiting the library. Wash and disinfect your hands before using the items.
    • Please let us take your temperature before entering the library. If you have a fever, you cannot use the items.

    How to use rare materials

    • To use rare materials, the application is required in advance. For more information, please visit here.


    Preventive Measures Required When Visiting the Main Library
      ・Please continue to take precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection.
       Please refrain from visiting the library if it is not necessary or urgent.
      ・Avoid using public transportation during peak hours.
      ・Please always wear a mask when visiting the library.
      ・Keep a social distance from other users and avoid long face-to-face conversations.
      ・Please keep your stay as short as possible.
