The library hours and services will be changed from Wednesday, December 1, 2021 to Monday, January 10, 2022 as follows.

Notice as of December 1, 2021
The level of activity restriction as specified in the Kyoto University’s “Guidelines for the Restriction of Activities to Prevent the Spread of the Novel Coronavirus” has been reduced to “level 1” since October 1, 2021.

The Main Library provides the following services and facilities, but they may be subject to change depending on the COVID-19 situation.
Please check our web site for the latest information.


All users must wear a mask, washing your hands and disinfect your fingers.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in order to maintain the library service as scheduled.

 ■ Major Changes

  • 【Weekdays】Opening hours have been changed to 9:00-22:00. Service counter is open until 20:00.
    *Saturday, Sunday and national holidays hours remain unchanged at 10:00-19:00.

  • The stack room is open until 1 hour before closing.
    The 3rd floor can be used until 30 minutes before closing.
    *Service hours have been changed to those before the spread of the COVID-19.

  • Long term loan service is available for the winter vacation.

 ■ Opening Hours and Services

  • Opening hours
    Weekdays: 9:00-22:00
    Saturday, Sunday and national holidays: 10:00-19:00 

    * Please see here for the Main Library calendar.
    * On Tuesday, December 28, 2021, the Main Library closes at 17:00.
    * The Main Library will be closed Wednesday, December 29, 2021 through Monday, January 3, 2022, reopening Tuesday, January 4, 2022.
    * The counter service on weekdays ends at 20:00, and only the following services are available after that.
     ・Borrowing and returning books that cannot be handled by the automatic check-out/return machine
     ・Picking up reserved books
     ・Photocopies of documents and books *Until 1 hour before closing

      1. Borrowing the Main Library Materials
        • Hours
          • Open shelves: 【Weekdays】9:00 - 22:00 【Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays】10:00-19:00
          • Stack rooms: 【Weekdays】9:00 - 21:00 【Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays】10:00-18:00. * Until 1 hour before closing.
        • How to Borrow Library Items
          • We provide 2 types of services ― regular service and book delivery service.
            Regular service:
            You can access shelves on the 1st and 2nd floors and in stack rooms of basements and take library items to borrow them by an automatic check-out machine on the 1st floor.
            Please find library items to borrow before visiting the library (via Kyoto University's OPAC KULINE) in order to keep your stay as short as possible.

            Book delivery service:
            This service is for the following KU members. 
            ・KU members who live outside Kyoto City
            ・KU members who cannot come to the library for health reasons
            You can apply via MyKULINE. For more information, please visit here.

          • The number of items you can borrow is within the maximum number shown in the table below.
          • For books in the stacks and open shelves, we provide the long-term loan service during the winter vacation period according to the schedule below.
            *As a part of the measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 infection, it will be possible to renew long-term loans in FY2021.
            *Periodicals are not available for a long-term loan.
            *The service is subject to change depending on the status of the pandemic.

            *You can use them only in the reading room.

          • Please use MyKULINE for extending loan period. The maximum number of extension is 5 for open -shelf books, 2 for books in the stacks, and 5 for periodicals.
            Renewal is not available if the book has been reserved by another user.
          • Please use the return box next to the main entrance.
            If you need to get item immediately proceeded, please use the automatic return machine on the 1st floor.
          • Return by mail
            We accept returns by mail. Please follow the instructions below.
            The items borrowed from other libraries of Kyoto University or the items ordered from other universities cannot be returned by mail.

            Note:
             ・Please pack the books appropriately so that they will not be damaged in transit.
                    Please wrap them in plastic bags or buffering material to prevent damage or water damage.
             ・Please write "Returned books inside" clearly on the package or invoice.
             ・The user is responsible for shipping costs.
             ・Please keep a copy of the invoice in case of accident during transportation.

      2. Reading area
        • Hours: 1st and 2nd Floor【Weekdays】9:00-22:00【Saturday, Sunday and national holidays】10:00-19:00
             3rd Floor 【Weekdays】9:00-21:30【Saturday, Sunday and national holidays】10:00-18:30 *Until 30 minutes before closing.
        • Reading rooms on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors are available for use.
        • Study Room 24 is available for use.
          • Opening hours are the same as the library hours.
          • Nagomi is not available for use.
        • The Learning Commons on the 1st floor can be used for collaborative research and study by groups of up to four people. (From the afternoon of Friday, November 5, 2021)
          • Please refrain from rearranging the seating and whiteboards.

        • If you want to take interactive online classes (classes with speech), you can use Commo Study Rooms 1-5. *A prior reservation required.

        • Please use the seats that are not marked as unavailable.
        • We ask you to stay up to 2 hours.
        • The following rooms are not available for use.
          • 3rd floor: Study Cubicles

      3. The PC area (OSL)
        • Hours:【Weekdays】9:00-21:30【Saturday, Sunday and national holidays】10:00-18:30*Until 30 minutes before closing.
          *Please note that the power of PCs will be turned off at closing time.
        • We ask you to stay up to 2 hours.
        • Please use terminals and seats that are not posted as unavailable.
        • Please disinfect the PC before use. Please keep the keyboard cover on.

      4. The Media Commons
        • Hours:【Weekdays】9:00-21:30【Saturday, Sunday and national holidays】10:00-18:30 *Until 30 minutes before closing.
        • We ask you to stay up to 2 hours.
        • From November 2021, the use of equipment and seats in the Media Commons has also been available.
          To prevent the spread of infection, the Media Theater can be used only one person.
          A prior reservation is required at the service counter 1 week in advance.
        • You can continue to use the Media Commons materials by taking them out to the PC area (OSL). Please follow the procedure below.
          1. Enter the Media Commons and select the materials you wish to view.
          2. Use the fixed PC terminal in the PC area (OSL).
          3. After viewing, return the material to its original position in the Media Commons.
          *Please prepare your own headphones and earphones.
            You can use your own PC in the PC area for materials
            that cannot be played on the fixed-type PC terminals in the PC area (OSL), such as Blu-ray discs and language learning CDs.
           When viewing materials in the reading area (not in the silent area), please be considerate of other users so that there is no sound leakage.
        • Please disinfect before use.

      5. Learning Support Desk
        • Hours:【Weekdays】13:00~19:00 *No reservation required.
        • To keep users and staffs safe,
          ・Time to talk is limited to 30 minutes per student per day.
          ・Please wash and disinfect your hands before talking.
          ・We will take your body temperature before talking. If you have a fever, you cannot use Learning Support Desk.
        • You can also use the "Learning Support Desk Online" instead of face to face advice. *Reservation required.

      6. Borrowing and document delivery service from KU libraries other than the Main Library
        • Hours: Until 1 hour before closing.
        • You can borrow books or obtain copies only from the libraries of other campuses.
          Please refer to "Intercampus Loan Service - Participating libraries" page.
        • Apply for the service through MyKULINE.
        • Please understand that your application may take more time to be processed than usual or even be canceled because of the COVID-19.
        • You can pick up delivered items at the Main Library's service counter.
        • Return items borrowed from KU libraries other than the Main Library at the Main Library’s service counter.

      7. Borrowing and document delivery service from other university libraries
        • The same rules as the above 6. apply.
        • Return items borrowed from libraries outside Kyoto University at the Main Library’s service counter.

      8. Microfilm readers
        • Hours: 9:00-16:45 weekdays
        • We ask you to use the reader up to 2 hours.
        • Application is required at the service counter.
        • Wash and disinfect your hands before using a reader.
        • We will take your body temperature before using microfilm readers.
          If you have a fever, you cannot use.

      9. NDL digitized contents and NDL historical recordings collection (Rekion) transmission service
        • Hours: 9:00-11:45, 13:00-16:45 weekdays
        • We ask you to use the service up to 2 hours.
        • Application is required at the service counter.
        • Wash and disinfect your hands before using the services.
        • We will take your body temperature before using NDL services.
          If you have a fever, you cannot use the services.
        • When using NDL’s historical recordings collection transmission service, bring your own headphone.
        • Please refer to this site for more details.

      10. Rare materials
        • Hours: 9:00-11:45, 13:00-16:45 weekdays
        • We ask you to use the service up to 2 hours.
        • A prior reservation is required.
          The dead line is one week prior to your desired access date.
        • Wash and disinfect your hands before using rare materials.
        • We will take your body temperature before using rare materials.
          If you have a fever, you cannot use the materials.

      11. Registration of library user cards, Registration of MyKULINE accounts
        We are now accepting registration of library user cards and MyKULINE accounts only via email.
        Please apply by the following steps.

          ①Send an e-mail to application660[at]mail2.adm.kyoto-u.ac.jp (replace [at] with @).
           *Please do not attach the application form or a photo of your ID card to your e-mail.
          ②Then we will send you an e-mail to inform you how to deliver the files.
          ③Follow the instructions in the email and submit the following application form and a photo of your ID card that shows the period of your affiliation with the university (eg. student/faculty ID card, working conditions notice, etc.).
          *Please mask information on the Notice of Employment other than your name, affiliation, status and term of employment.

        Your library user card is completed, we will inform you via e-mail.
        Please come to the Main Library to receive your card between 10:00 to 16:00 on weekdays.

      12. Guide for non-KU users
        Currently, we are restricting the use of non-KU users to prevent spread of the COVID-19 .
        For more information, please see bellow.
        Please refrain from visiting the Main Library if it is urgent and please apply for inter-library loan services.
        For details, please click here. We ask you to use the Main Library up to 2 hours.

        Those who have a Library Card such as graduates
        • To use the items that need to be picked up by staff such as the stack items, please apply from the reservation form in advance.
        • We accept new issuance of the Library Card for graduates. For details, please visit here.

        Other general users
        • If you don't have a letter of introduction, we will refuse to enter the Main Library regardless of circumstances.
          Before visiting, please consult the library of the university/institute that you belong to and request a reference survey and a letter of introduction.
          If you don't belong to any university/institute, please consult the public libraries nearby instead.
          We confirm the items you request and issue a letter of introduction.
          Please bring a letter of introduction and come to the Main Library on the day you booked.
        • Wear a mask before visiting the library.
          Wash and disinfect your hands before using the items.
        • Please let us take your temperature before entering the library.
          If you have a fever, you cannot use the items.

        How to use rare materials

        • To use rare materials, the application is required in advance. For more information, please visit here.


Preventive Measures Required When Visiting the Main Library
  ・Please continue to take precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection.
  ・Avoid using public transportation during peak hours.
  ・Please always wear a mask when visiting the library.

  ・Keep a social distance from other users and avoid long face-to-face conversations.
  ・Please keep your stay as short as possible, approximately 2 hours.
